Dear Holly, 2006 was an interesting year. As the economy
picked up, we filled jobs in start ups and established firms, universities
and non-profits. We designed compensation structures for a 150-employee
manufacturer, a 40-person high technology firm, and a large health care
provider. We conducted “hr audits” and did some outplacement.
What do our clients have in common? They need our advice and support as they
work to create more profitable organizations. We are proud to say we earned 4.6 on a 5.0 scale from our clients in 2006 for our
services. Thanks to all of you who completed our client
questionnaire. Our business grows entirely through referrals and repeat
business from satisfied clients.
HMK Associates is proud to be supporting
some amazing Pittsburgh-based companies with important missions. This year,
for example, we had the pleasure of helping ImpactGames, a company aspiring
to impact society and promote change through interactive media. “Unlike most serious games, it aims to
bridge the gap between education and entertainment and reach a mass
market" – CNN ImpactGames recently launched PeaceMaker, a
video game simulation of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Excitement for the
game had been building for two years as the company maintained visibility
through presentations and media coverage. They needed two first-rate software
developers with 3-5 years experience in game design. . . yesterday. We found
them. As a result, we were recognized by the
person who matters most . . . our client. “As a small start-up the hiring
process was crucial to our success and the release of our first product. The
jobs we handed to HMK Associates were tough to fill and we needed people
fast. They recruited two people who perfectly fit the specs. HMK was highly
responsive and effective.” - Asi Burak, Co-Founder and CCO,

Mid year, we retooled our pricing for
recruiting services. We have a new product we call RecruitSelect that we (and
our clients) are excited about. It is a “fixed price” contract
that allows for ease of budgeting for our customers and puts part of our fee
at risk if we don't fill the job. Call us if you'd like to hear about it.
We've been out and about lately, and we
thought you might like to hear what we've learned. Here are some tips, thanks
to Yvonne Campos from Campos Market Research, Jeanne Voight from MindWare,
Jana Eggers from Spreadshirt and Chris Allison from Upsight, LLC. (And thanks
to PTC, Chatham College Center for Women's Entrepreneurship, and Pitt's
Institute for Entrepreneurial Excellence Alumni Program for sponsoring these
events.) “When you want to sell your business .
. . no one wants it. When you don't want to sell . . . the phone doesn't stop
ringing.” (Yvonne Campos) “Forget advertising. 80% of purchases
are due to recommendations from other people.” (Jana Eggers) “Why do we start businesses? Because
we all got tired of clicking our heels in front of the desk of someone we
didn't respect.” (Chris Allison) “Fear is healthy– it brings out
creativity and resourcefulness.” (Jeanne Voight)
